As a consulting specialist in data modeling, I've joined many projects long after they've gone off the rails in one way or another, often due to lack of data and process deconstruction and abstraction, use of cookie-cutter anti-patterns, the absence of reusable objects, even circular logic and more. At such a point, I can still help, but had a proper data model been established prior to and in conjunction with the build, the project's success may well have been better ensured.. for a lot less money than was spent.

Compared to implementing proper design after the fact, doing so up front is not only almost free in real terms, it pays dividends year-over-year due to its simplicity, lightweight mass, and ease of use through clarity of design.. all of which lowers cost of ownership.
