The Past Week In Tech; EBWiki, QueerGlobal and Interviewing, oh my!

So, how have things been?

Decent and increasing.

First & foremost, I’m mentoring / coaching. In the process, I’m returning to an old love. I first started mentoring with Thinkful several years ago to supplement freelance work. I found it rewarding to help and coach people along the way.

This go round, I’ve signed up with codementor.io. I’m treating this a bit more independently than I did in the past. Whereas I thought of myself as a Thinkful mentor, I now think of myself as a mentor who’s hanging his shingle out at one place to start. One of my long term goals is to take my knowledge and systematize it.

Meanwhile, back at the EBWiki ranch, our team’s decided to go in another direction for the Rails upgrade path. As opposed to trying to bring the same codebase up through multiple levels, we’re going to create a separate branch with up to date technology and retrofit existing functionality to a new scaffold, or baseline. This will guarantee that any artifacts, or sources of library deprecation do not affect/impact the work in progress. We’ll also have the chance to use more modern front end techniques over time.

As I’ve been interviewing, I’ve also been refreshing my familiarity with a range of technologies. In particular:

  • I’ve been reading up on what happens when one makes an HTTP request to a Rails server. I got this question in an interview, and while I didn’t mention the routes file before the controller that responds if the route matches, I think I could have given a fuller response.
  • As I’ve not worked on frontend much recently, I decided to fill in that gap with diving into the QueerGlobal front end. Towards that end, I’ve used ChatGPT to help flesh out Jest templates for the app using the React Testing Library as well as set up a roadmap for work on that axis for the next month. Fleshing out tests, consuming REST APIs using React hooks and design patterns are next up for me.
  • I’m also buttressing my Python knowledge with work on the Python Exercism.org track as well as finding a Python based project to complete. Suggestions welcome.

Meanwhile, if you believe I can help you, find me on codementor!
