Mike Green

I've worked with JavaScript for my entire career, beginning in the days of DHTML, through the era of jQuery, AJAX, and "Web 2.0," and into the current era of constantly evolving ECMAScript standards, browser API's, and single-page applications. It's been my language of choice on the server and client side for the last several years. I have extensive experience building full-stack applications in JS, as well as with build tools like Webpack and Babel, and the overall JavaScript ecosystem.

I learned to code by learning Ruby on Rails. I originally picked it up in late 2006, and by 2008 I had built my first production application - a video contest site for Acer Computers. From 2010 through 2014 I built and maintained a local news site for the New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania area called The Alternative Press. I've also worked on several large scale, Rails-based SaaS platforms from 2015 onward.

I had my first exposure to React in 2017 at ePublishing, but what helped me to truly understand it and hone my skills was teaching it to my students in 2018-19. Since then I've used React as my frontend library of choice for a variety of work and freelance projects.

I began my career as a generalist at a small company, where I had to wear all the hats. That included server administration and handling the daily ops duties for my clients' applications and websites. I have over a decade of experience provisioning servers, planning application architecture, standing up apps in production. I specialize in Linux server administration and application deployment on any provider, but I have a good deal of familiarity with AWS and Heroku in particular.

During my time with Fifth Room Creative, I built custom WordPress plugins and themes for our clients to help them achieve their marketing goals. These projects ranged from e.g. Genesis child themes, all the way up to completely custom, fully responsive themes with custom post types and JSON REST APIs. In addition to theme development, I'm also adept at migrating sites between servers and domains, security hardening, and hack cleanup. In 2012, I was a core contributor to the Pods Framework WordPress plugin.
