10 Guide to WordPress maintenance mode

Start wriIf you are new to WordPress, you must be exploring it and coming across new things; some of which you might know about while being unaware of others.
While trying something new, we all encounter features and modes that we are not well-equipped to deal with. However, lack of knowledge about the useful features of a site might be regretful later. At times, a few common features can be beneficial and can get things done effortlessly.
One such feature offered by WordPress is the Maintenance mode. The WordPress maintenance mode is quite a handy characteristic of the site that allows you to save yourself from losing potential customers. The maintenance mode is widely used by WordPress users mainly due to two reasons.

  1. While you are updating your site and adding better modes and features
  2. To fix any sudden bug or glitch in your website affecting its performance.
You might be thinking that updates or modifications can also be done while your website is live, so why the maintenance mode? When you make any changes to your website while it is live, it might glitch on your website. A user visiting it would try once or twice and then move to another one. However, if you turn on the maintenance mode, your website or page goes into a maintenance mode instead of compromised functioning.
A message shows up on your site, stating, "Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute." This intimates your customer about the update, and they can visit later. Moreover, this feature also allows you to create a "coming soon" page for your website if you are launching one soon.

How does it happen?

There are two kinds of WordPress maintenance services that you can try according to your feasibility.

• Built-in maintenance

The built-in maintenance mode gets activated when it detects any update. Thus, you do not have to put the website into maintenance mode yourself.

• Manual maintenance

You can yourself put your website into maintenance mode by downloading a plugin or by creating a code for WordPress website maintenance mode.

Plugins for Maintenance mode

Plugins of every sort are available at WordPress for any problems you encounter. Though the maintenance mode can be turned on by coding, plugins are an easy option if you don't find coding easy enough to go through with.

1. WP Maintenance mode

WP maintenance mode is a free plugin for adding a maintenance page to your website. This particular plugin is also great if you want to customize settings for each site individually.

2. CMP – Coming Soon & Maintenance Plugin

CMP is another free plugin that allows you to add a maintenance page or coming soon page with smart code in the background. You can also whitelist or blacklist pages from the maintenance mode along with customization of your choice.

How to take WordPress out of maintenance mode

It is not really a task to turn off the maintenance mode. But your system might get stuck in maintenance mode if you refresh the site during an update. To remove the maintenance mode from your site,
• Log in to the cPanel
• Visit the file manager and open the WordPress installation folder
• If you see a file named .maintenance., delete it
Sometimes, if you cannot understand the details about putting on or turning off of maintenance mode, getting help from a WordPress maintenance service is advised.
