CodeMentor is a joke!

Published Jul 11, 2022

What started off as a good idea has become a race to the bottom. Increasingly, whenever 'open requests' come in the requests are either ridiculous or unethical:

Whenever I look at the project list I'm seeing things like,

"Build an advanced ecommerce platform"

or,

"Help me to build my exam project"

What's even worse is the massive volumes of responses that people are getting. Here, it's perfectly normal for an 'open request' to have 7 or 8 replies - from other developers - within just a few minutes of going live.

Oh, did I say replies?

Of course, the actual reply system is a joke. You're serverely restricted with both regards to character count and what you can say. The whole thing feels like being in a some kind of bizarre prison camp. Having a little Twitter-style reply box for the developers to respond simply isn't good enough!

Another thing that bothers me enormously is how clingy Code Mentor is when it comes to the business of parting with cash that has been hard earned by the developers who are dumb enough to use their platform.

Personally speaking, I have a monetized YouTube channel that pays me every month. Setting that up wasn't easy but it was FAR easier than with Code Mentor - who hit you with nightmare, confusing forms upon forms - followed by a promise that you'll have to do it all again soon.

How many developers, like me, have earned on this platform and then - having ran into CM's tight-fisted policies have concluded, "I'll just leave it"? How much cash has been left on the table by those poor developers whose funds are being held up because of Code Mentor's bullschitt? I wonder how many hundreds of thousands of dollars are sitting in the bank accounts of Code Mentor, due to their bizarre, outdated and confusing-by-design cash handling policies.

Just to state the obvious, the end result of all of this is the denegration of web development - as a whole.

Sometimes, being a developer here feels like being in a fish tank full of starving fish. Every once in a blue moon somebody appears and chucks a crumb into the tank. When that happens, it's a feeding frenzy.

What kind of policing went into this?

Who decided it was a good idea to invite LOADS of developers on board - to the point when it's literally pointless to even bother responding to 'open requests'?

Oh... did I say 'pointless'? Now, THERE'S a good word. It's pointless! It's as pointless as buying a lottery ticket.

I ran a test - just the other day. I sent a message along the lines of, "Can you just confirm that you've read this?" This was in response to an 'open request' that - as usual - was being bombarded with responses. Of course, the user did not get back to me. Who can blame them? They were too busy drowning in responses.

And for all of this, Code Mentor has the nerve to post a blogging section where I give tips about web development? What a nerve! What an absolute joke!

Well, I'll give you two tips. I have one for the developers and one for Code Mentor:

For the developers: This platform is a waste of time. You'd be better off going to fiverr.com. Sure, the pay sucks but at least you'll be dealing in an arena with more transparency than Code Mentor.

For 'Code Mentor': If this place is to have any value at all then it needs a complete overhaul. Frankly, you've got far too many developers on here, your payment policy is HIGHLY questionable and the whole system is just out of date.

This ENTIRE WEBSITE needs to be torn down and rebuilt.

The web does not need another Elance. The race to the bottom must end now.

You’re not far from the truth. What I don’t like is that the coders are quick to accept a job but not so quick to complete it.
