Thallo is a voluntary carbon credit marketplace backed by blockchain technology for businesses looking to get standardised access to the carbon markets across multiple asset issuing bodies (“registries”). The Thallo Marketplace now lists over $500,000 worth of carbon credits across 25+ projects.
Role Overview
Worked with 2 fellow Co-Founders to secure $2.5M seed investment. Successfully secured grants from Celo and Ripple worth $350,000. Hired a team of 7 people across Engineering, QA, DevOps, Web3 and UX design, with a total company wide team of 17. I was responsible for setting up the technical departments, hiring staff, implementing processes throughout the business, reporting to investors, as well as more hands-on technical tasks such as application architecture, project management and product delivery.
Design Considerations
Security - operationally and technically, at both the application and infrastructure levels. Includes 3rd party code analysis and pen testing on Web2 stacks and smart contracts. Data integrity - idempotency, parallel processing safety, safe system recovery even if the app fails mid-process, DB row locking, transactions, constraints. Auditability. Scalability - all compute layers have auto scaling set up and heavy asynchronous tasks are processed using AWS’s SQS coupled with bespoke step functions which allow for partial process failure and safe retry.
Stack
Nest JS, React, Postgresql, Solidity, AWS - Fargate, RDS, SQS, S3, CloudFront, ControlTower, VPC. Segregated secure compute layer to handle sensitive operations. Docker throughout - local dev envs, build envs, cloud envs. TypeScript throughout - backend, frontend, devops. Mock services for Polygon/Celo (hardhat), XRPL, registries & AWS for isolated testing environments. Internal and external HTTP APIs, including Webhooks for push style messaging.
